For example, since Poland's accession to the European Union, fertilizer consumption has increased by 31%, while crop production has only increased by 5%. Farmers are just now realizing the truth that the era of increased yields due to the use of artificial fertilizers and pesticides has suddenly ended and a period of skyrocketing costs and problems with previously unknown, increasingly worse pests has set in. What happened to the quality of food? Polish research shows that many fruits and vegetables, although appearing similar to those of the 90s, now contain tens of percent less vitamins. Worst of all, pesticides that we consume with food are increasingly detected in our bodies in amounts exceeding permissible standards. Recently, at the urging of Marcin Bustowski, head of the Solidarni Farmers' Trade Union of the Republic of Poland, many Poles have started commissioning tests for glyphosate in their urine and publicizing them. The appeal is becoming louder and those who have conducted tests are greatly surprised at the exceedance of glyphosate standards. A resident of Kalisz, Mr. Łukasz G., has contacted the editorial office of the newspaper "Głos Kalisza" to publicize his results to warn others. He said, "Some time ago, I started to experience health problems. I felt powerless, anxious, and had trouble falling asleep. I had periodic high blood pressure. Of course, I consulted a doctor, but additionally, prompted by Marcin Bustowski's appeal, I had glyphosate tests done on my urine. I was very surprised to find that my levels were also exceeded. I emphasize that I am not a farmer and I do not have direct contact with plant protection products. I am a cashier and collector. I try to eat healthily. I eat meat once a week, mainly duck and goose. I consume wholemeal sourdough bread, baked in a reputable private bakery. I choose other products consciously, and despite this, I have exceeded the glyphosate standard by 245%," said Mr. Łukasz, before handing over the laboratory test results for publication. In the Polish market, glyphosate is found in as many as 150 so-called plant protection products. Restrictions on the use of glyphosate apply in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and Italy. Other countries are demanding a total ban on the use of glyphosate-containing preparations.
