Do islanders throw chicks off cliffs?

On the Vestmannaeyjar islands off the coast of Iceland, a yearly tradition is the throwing of puffin chicks from the cliffs.

This takes place at the turn of August and September when the chicks leave their nests. The young ones confuse the lights of the cities with the glow of the moon and instead of heading to the ocean, they move inland.

Whole families go out at night to the streets collecting the chicks and releasing them near the cliffs.

This is important because the female lays only one egg a year and the population of these charming birds is steadily declining.
