What to do to prevent the apartment from heating up in hot weather? Especially an apartment with windows in the attic.

Are wooden shutters a proven method? Does closing windows and keeping hot air out of the way do something? Should several solutions be used at the same time to feel any effect? I am looking for an alternative solution to the electricity devices used (air conditioner, fan).
