It begins šŸ¤”šŸ˜±

Twitter will collect private data

Social media platform X, known for years as Twitter, has been going through massive changes since it was bought by Elon Musk . The latest one will concern privacy policy.

It's about collecting biometric data, i.e. physical characteristics of a person, such as a face scan or fingerprint.

That's not all, however, because the regulations will also include a word on the possible collection of information on employment or education.

"We may collect and use your personal information (such as your employment history, educational history, employment preferences, skills and abilities, job search activity and engagement, etc.) to recommend potential job opportunities to you, to share with potential employers, when you apply for a job to enable employers to find potential candidates and display more relevant ads to you," reads the new privacy policy.

The changes will enter into force on September 29.

New Twitter service

The mention of potential job offers in the privacy policy is intended to indicate that this is a new feature introduced by the social networking site. Speculations that X wants to offer recruitment services have existed for a long time. According to BBC reports, in May, X Corp acquired a tech recruitment service called Laskie.

Liberty Vittert, a professor of data science practice at Washington University in St. Louis, said the move is in line with X's attempt to provide users with "more targeted and individual experiences" and competing platforms like LinkedIn.

But she said users "should absolutely be wary of this change," warning that employers could misuse it, for example by using tweets, retweets or accounts they follow to make decisions about work.

She complained of serious ailments. They pulled something terrifying from her brain!

A service only for the selected?

Technology ethics researcher Dr. Stephanie Hare says the data collection "is mass data capture, albeit with your consent," and because it's not mandatory for users, she doesn't think the move is worrisome from a freedoms standpoint civic.

It is not mandatory as data collection will only be for premium account users.

The company told the BBC that "X will offer the option to provide your ID in conjunction with a selfie photo to add a layer of verification."

"Biometric data can be taken from both ID and selfie for matching purposes. This will further help us link the account to a real person by processing their government-issued ID. It will also help fight spoofing attempts and increase security platforms," it added.

The platform also plans to provide the ability to make video and audio calls, but it is not yet known when the feature will come into effect.
