Enemy at the gate - World economic forum and black rock take over Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said his government was preparing to attend the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos in January and that he had spoken again with BlackRock Inc. CEO Larry Fink about post-war recovery.
"Specialists of this company are already helping Ukraine to organize a fund for the reconstruction of our state," said Zelensky, who had a video call with Fink in his evening address to the nation in September. He did not say whether he will be attending the January 16-20 WEF in person or attending virtually.
Zelensky also said that he had spoken with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and raised the prospect of Italy's participation in strengthening Ukraine's air defenses.
Russian forces continued offensive operations around Bakhmut and Avdievka in the eastern Donetsk region, while trying to improve their tactical position on the Lyman axis in the north, Ukraine's General Staff reported on Facebook. According to the statement, Russian troops carried out missile strikes over the past 24 hours and fired 33 barrages with multi-missile systems, including targeting civilian targets in the southern city of Kherson.
The General Staff made no mention of any Russian airstrikes for the second day in a row, suggesting a decline in Russian Air Force activity after a drone attack on a base in southern Russia this week.
The head of the intelligence oversight committee of the lower house of the German parliament said the recent unmasking of an alleged Russian spy in the country's foreign intelligence service suggests authorities have only been "half-way on" to the Kremlin's threat of infiltration in recent years.
"What everyone has to take into account is that there is still intense intelligence work going on like during the Cold War, and at a time when Russia is waging an illegal war with Ukraine, we have to keep a very close eye on it," Konstantin von Notz, MP for Bundestag of the ruling Green party, he said in an interview with Deutschlandfunk radio.
"I would be very pleased if this unfortunate accident caused us to take a critical look so that we are in better shape for the future."
Meanwhile, Kiev's electricity supply is limited but stable and is evenly distributed thanks to temporary reconnection measures, Serhiy Kovalenko, head of energy company Yasno, said on Facebook.
He added that it was "difficult to predict" how reliably the equipment would handle lower temperatures and higher usage, also pointing to the threat of Russian missile and drone strikes. Emergency shutdowns will be in effect in the Ukrainian capital throughout the winter, Petro Panteleev, deputy head of the Kiev city administration, said earlier on television.
The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights recorded 17,831 civilian casualties in Ukraine from late February, when Russia launched a full-scale invasion, to December 26, including 6,884 dead and 10,947 wounded.
"Most of the recorded civilian casualties were caused by the use of explosive weapons with wide-ranging effects, including heavy artillery fire, multiple launch missile systems, rockets and airstrikes," OHCHR said in a statement. The actual numbers are likely much higher, as information from some places where hostilities are particularly intense has been delayed and many reports are still awaiting confirmation.
According to Yevhen Jenin, Ukraine's deputy interior minister, about 700 critical infrastructure facilities in Ukraine, including gas pipelines, power substations and bridges, have been damaged since the Russian invasion.
In total, more than 35,000 facilities across the country have been damaged by Russian attacks, Yenin said on television late Tuesday.
