Due to the war in Ukraine, the number of marriages with minors is increasing
An unexpected consequence of the Ukrainian-Russian war is the increase in the number of marriages concluded with children in poor countries. This is because more and more families in Asia and Africa are struggling to find food. As a result, parents more and more often decide to marry their daughters prematurely. This is especially true of countries such as Bangladesh, South Sudan, Chad, Mali and Burkina Faso. Ukraine was a very important link in the chain of food supplies to poor countries. The cheap grain exported by it was the basis of food for many people. Due to hostilities, drought or floods, many regions have started to run out of affordable food, leaving girls vulnerable to forced marriage at a very young age. About 12 million girls under the age of 18 are affected each year. These practices were to be prevented by the UN aid program, which focused on feeding school children, social assistance and promoting independence. Thanks to actions taken in 2016, it was possible to reduce the number of premature marriages by 15%. Unfortunately, due to the difficult situation in the world, some programs were suspended. The goal of the United Nations was to eliminate this phenomenon completely by 2030, but in the current situation there is no chance of achieving these assumptions.
