Fires in Poland
In Poland, two serious fires took place in May 2024. The first one broke out on May 10, 2024 at a waste disposal site on Wyzwolenia Street in Siemianowice Śląskie. The fire covered about 5,500 m² of the landfill, and during the extinguishing operation, explosions of barrels and tanks with chemicals occurred. As a result of the fire, two firefighters were injured.
The second fire took place on May 12, 2024 in a trade hall with an area of 63,000 m² on Marywilskiej Street in Warsaw. The fire appeared at night, and the Fire Department was notified by an automatic sensor. Nevertheless, the fire spread rapidly, and after 11 minutes, 2/3 of the hall was already burning. Additionally, some fire protection systems failed to operate, which led to the complete burning of the hall.
In recent days, there have also been fires at a waste disposal site in Czechowice-Dziedzice (May 16, 100 m²), a fire in Bolesławiec near the railway station (May 16, a building), a hazardous waste fire in Przylep, and a fire at a high school in Grodzisk Mazowiecki (May 13).
President Duda assessed that the series of fires in Poland may be an attempt to destabilize the country from the outside, and Marshal Hołownia reported that "in recent months, security services have thwarted attempts to sabotage Polish infrastructure."
According to the president, "it is difficult not to have suspicions that a series of 5 or 6 very serious fires in different places is not random"; "the matters are being investigated."
Hołownia remarked that "Putin wants to destabilize the situation in many European countries before the European elections"; "many acts of sabotage on Polish territory that were to be directed at our infrastructure, industry, border crossings, places where we live, have been thwarted"; "in recent months, the security services have done a tremendous job and prevented really bad things from happening, because we have the courage as a state to clearly state that we stand on the side of freedom, democracy, and values."
