On May 4th, International Firefighter's Day

Firefighters' Day, although officially established only in 2002, has been celebrated in Poland for hundreds of years on the name day of the patron saint of this professional group, St. Florian. The holiday is an opportunity to express gratitude to firefighters (both professional and volunteer) for their dangerous and difficult work, often saving health and lives.

On the occasion of this holiday, it is worth mentioning the dangers associated with irresponsible behavior with fire. A very dangerous phenomenon, almost a plague at this time of year, is the burning of dry grass in meadows and wastelands. This irresponsible action is often motivated by the desire to save oneself work, and there is still a belief that the burned area will become more fertile. However, specialists argue that it is exactly the opposite. Instead of fertilizing the soil, fire impoverishes it, disrupting the natural process of organic residue decomposition, killing the organisms responsible for this process, and destroying the layer of soil humus.
