Mr. Stanislaw Smolak came to the United States in 1912 from Kamionka (Austrian partition). He worked hard in Detroit, saved money, and in 1921 bought a plot of land in Cross Village on Lake Michigan.
Mr. Stanislaw, using found wood and stones, built a wonderful facility - Polska Restaurants LEGS INN . Smolak was helped by the local Odawa Indians, who called him White Cloud. Mr. Smolak, a self-taught artist, carved unusual objects and furniture from stones, tree branches and wood thrown up by the lake, which he called "curiosities of nature."
The Legs Inn became an iconic social gathering place for the local community and still is today. For almost 100 years, the Smolaks have been running the Legs Inn, which has also been declared a Michigan Historic Site!
