The Polish district in Detroit - POLE TOWN - was demolished because General Motors wanted to build a new factory there.

In 1981, the Polish district in Detroit was demolished to make way for the construction of the General Motors Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly plant. Poletown was settled in the late 19th century when the first waves of Polish immigrants arrived in Detroit, and for many years it served as the heart of Detroit's Polish community. Poletown experienced its greatest period of growth in the 1920s and 1930s, when thousands of Polish immigrants arrived in Detroit in search of work. Despite massive protests, bulldozers entered Poletown and leveled the district to the ground. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrKXULU5mI8
