Layer 2.0 is designed to solve the scalability problem. This is undoubtedly a priority for Ethereum. For it to realize its vision and become a computer of the world, it needs to handle financial transactions, smart contracts and decentralized applications on its network at a fast pace. Initially, Ethereum could only process 5-15 transactions per second. This did not allow Ethereum to compete with payment systems such as Visa or MasterCard, which handle up to 2 thousand transactions per second. A big difference, right?

Layer two solutions for Ethereum refers to additional protocols or frameworks built on top of the main Ethereum blockchain to improve its scalability and efficiency. These solutions aim to alleviate the network congestion and high gas fees that are often associated with the Ethereum blockchain. Some of the main projects building layer two solutions for Ethereum include: Optimism: An Ethereum scaling solution that uses optimistic rollups to increase transaction throughput and reduce fees. zkSync: A layer two scaling solution that uses zero-knowledge rollups to significantly increase the processing capacity of the Ethereum network. Loopring: A layer two scaling solution that uses zkRollups to enhance the throughput and reduce costs of Ethereum transactions. These projects, along with others in the space, are working to address the scalability challenges of the Ethereum network and improve the overall user experience for decentralized applications and transactions.
