There is no single definition of securities. Pursuant to the Act on Trading in Financial Instruments of Securities, we include, among others: shares, bonds or rights to shares, which must be registered with the National Depository for Securities. However, the Act does not mention non-investment securities, i.e. bills of exchange, bills of lading (sea waybills) or checks.
Generally, securities are negotiable documents that give the opportunity to acquire certain property rights. In the past, they had a physical form in the form of paper with written content, the validity and value of which was determined by the signature or stamp of the issuing entity. Nowadays, securities take the form of digital records. The basic feature of such documents is their easy transferability. In order to speed up the whole procedure, special stock exchanges such as the Warsaw Stock Exchange were created.
Types of Securities:
shares, e.g. promissory notes or shares;
goods, e.g. proof of storage;
debt, e.g. bonds, promissory notes;
short-term - must be sold within a year of purchase, e.g. 3-month bonds;
long-term - such papers can be held for many years.
Not all securities can be traded by private individuals. Some of them are intended for large financial institutions or investment funds. As a private person, you need to have a brokerage account that authorizes you to trade in shares or bonds.
